Welcome Back!  Happy New Year.
I hope that 2017 will be a great year for everyone.

Unfortunately, the start of 2017 did not start off well for one individual:

In Chicago, an 18-year old boy with an evident mental illness, was bullied, harassed, kidnapped, and tortured by four teenagers.  They used FACEBOOK, a popular social media site, to stream what they were doing.

How should social media be used APPROPRIATELY?
Should penalties be enforced for people who do not use social media sites properly?

If you were a judge, how would you punish these four teenagers?
Explain.

  1. Social media should be used appropriately by not posting pictures of yourself or other individuals naked, not using social media to bully, insult, torment or intimidate others, post pictures of places you have visited and keep your account private. I think punishments should be enforced to people who do not use social media sites properly because what they are doing is not appropriate, tolerated or even nice. Some people use it to bully other people with out getting caught. If I were a judge I would punish these teenagers very harshly. I would do that by giving them 20 years in jail and maybe longer. I would also take away all of their social media accounts and never let them create one again. If they are getting better I would let them off with a parol but if they start it up again they would go right back in jail for the rest of their lonely lives. If they are getting better I would still keep them on a parol. So technically they would be on a parol for the rest of their lives!

    1. They shouldn't even be allowed to be on a parole! They had no right to do what they did!!!

    3. Yes! What happened to this 18 year old boy was very sad. Those bullies should definitely be punished so that they will never ever do it again.

  2. When one is using social media they must recognize if the post is hurtful, racist or sexist and most importantly, private.
In my elementary school an expert of cyberbullying came to speak to us and was very helpful. A law should be enforced which states that if social media is used inappropriately, that person must take a class on social media and its dangers if not used properly.
If I were a judge I would send these teens to jail for torturing this boy and make sure they are taught to behave properly on social media at all times.

    2. I totally agree they should be punished for what they did! It's cool that someone came to your school to talk about that! A cop once came to are school to talk about that but it wasn't in much detail, on the other hand I heard by an internet hacker that works for the law that there is an insane number of ciber bullying especially on snapchat!

  3. Happy New Year!!

In the situation described, the bullying, harassment, kidnapping and torture would probably have occurred with or without social media. In this context, I think social media was used more like a tool by the bullies to show off what they were doing. It might have even helped the police in finding the teens who performed these horrible acts against the mentally handicapped 18 year old boy. Although, that is not to say that I agree that this was an appropriate use of social media. Social media should be used as a means of communication, but never as a means to hurt others or post inappropriate content. I do believe that penalties should be enforced for those who do not respect the terms of use of the social media sites. If I were a judge, I absolutely would punish the 4 teenagers involved in this act. A strong message needs to go out to the public that bullying is not acceptable. The punishment would be need to be severe enough to help prevent future similar events.

  4. By now, we all know very well that a lot of people use social media to cyber-bully, post inappropriate things or insult people in very hurtful ways (being racist or sexist). Unfortunately, these kind of people don’t really bother thinking twice about posting these things. They are mainly focused on hurting the person but they don’t think about the consequences at all. If I were a judge, I would definitely have them sent to jail for torturing this boy and show them what a real consequence is really like.

    3. I find it is very true that bullies only focus on hurting the person and don't think of the consequences for them and the person being harassed.

  5. When posting of commenting on social media, people have to think before they post. Some posts are harmful and embarrassing and some comments are hurtful and unkind.
I think there should be punishments to people who don't use social media properly. Like people who post inappropriate pictures of themselves or of other people. Especially for people who post embarrassing pictures of their friends on social media without them knowing.
If I was a judge I would've put these four teenagers in jails for harassing and bullying the kid with the mental illness. I would also not allow them any privileges to social media. They would also have to apologize to the kid for how they harassed and treated him.
This news was very shocking and I can't believe that these teenagers would do this to this child even though they knew that he had a mental illness.

  6. I think that these teenagers should definitely be in prison for life I think what they did was totally wrong and they should be punished for it! I think that prison with no chance of parole is definitely what they deserve! The only thing I would have done differently is put them in prison for life! (Although I don't know if for life was part of their sentence?) I think people should definitely be using all social media properly! Although it has become very different to control what people are posting these days! I think the only way for there to be at least a little bit of control over what KIDS are posting is that their parents make sure to check all there kids social media without their kids knowledge!

  7. First off I would like to say that what these four teenagers did to this poor boy was horrifying and disgusting. I think that social media should be used appropriately by people posting things that are not offensive to anyone, posting happy and peaceful comments and pictures, not posting nude photos, and not involving in any type of bullying what so ever. People should use social media with their right judgement and not what their friends are doing. I think that penalties should absolutely be enforced for people who don’t use social media appropriately. It’s a felony like any other crime. I think that if someone bullies someone, posts a nude photo, or offends a person or a race they should go to court and the judge would decide the amount of time in jail. If I were a judge of a case like this I would absolutely give these teenagers a long time in prison. Not only did they torture, bully, hurt, and humiliate a poor innocent boy, but they put it on social media too.

  8. I feel that social media should be used for only good things and never anything bad, but if it is something like the news it should be permitted. I think the penalties for people who do not use social media properly should be; that their accounts should be reviewed for inappropriate content then deleted within 5 hours. If I were the judge I would make sure the 4 teenagers endured the exact same torture that the 18 year old boy had to go through then they all would receive the death penalty in the form of the gas chamber. I would make sure they would not be allowed to have any visitors in prison and would not be able to say their goodbyes to their families before they were sent to the gas chamber. I will not ever tolerate anyone kidnapping or torturing against anyone with special needs. I think if anyone ever does anything like that they should certainly be given the death penalty. If I was the judge I would make sure that after these 4 people have died their families must pay for the therapy this boy will have and any medical bills this boy will have.

  9. Social media should only be used to communicate with others. Most of the social media apps are for communicating and to take picture and video. But social media shouldn’t be used to harass and bully someone online. Even though some teenagers or kids do use social media for harassing and bullying, I think that it should stop. If there would be penalties for doing that, I think that the pers a little bit of money. It would only be faire doing that since if they do start bullying people online and then get blocked out, they will then just stop and if they don’t stop then they will just keep getting blocked out and keep paying.
If I would have to punish these four teenagers, I would put them into jail. I would do that because if you do harass and torture a 18- year old boy that has a mental illness, that would be very mean. Also it would be illegal to kidnap him.

  11. Social media should be only used for talking and posting appropriate pictures to friends or family, and only to people you know. If someone on social media were to use it innaproprietly, I think that that person should be fined with a small amount of money. Then, if they decide to do it again, they shall be charged more and more money every time they post innapropriate content. If someone is harassing or threatening a person on social media, I think that they deserve to go to jail. If I was a judge for the 4 boys who did this, I would send them to jail, just like that. That behavior is disgusting and hurtful, and if they got away with it, people around the world would think that they could get away with it as well.

  12. If I were the judge for this case I would definitely send them to jail. For at least 1 or 2 years. These teenagers should understand what they did to the guy, and I'm sure right they're probably thinking "we didn't do anything stupid, why should we go to jail?". They were stupid enough to torture and KIDNAP somebody, and the fact that they posted on facebook makes them even more stupid lol. Maybe they should go to rehab so they can get help with the situation and realize what they did is very serious and very wrong.

  13. Social media should be used in the ways they were meant, to post non-bylling/harrasement,and other things they were created for. Like to share thigs with friends family or other people. Those teenagers in my opinion should serve the same punishments as if someone older did it. They did th act, they suffer the consequences. Yes there should be some sort of penaltie for using social media properly. If you are using it to target or hurt someone you should have all your social platforms removed and deleted and people shouldn't be allowed to use technology that you can use in any way to target or hurt anyone for a while. (I'm sorry for this bad quality I'm just really tired)

  15. I think that it is not execrable for people to ruin other people's lives and project it to everyone else. It really bothers people and is not a good way to use social media. If I was the judge I would put the children in probation and ban them from social media.!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. I think social media should be used for uploading appropriate stuff like what u did on vacation or anything else about your self and socializing with friends. I think there should absolutely be penalties of not using social media correctly because it's not what it's invested for and some parents will just give their kid a warning or something but if I were a judge, i'd punish them by putting the kids into rehab because they should know that what they did is very wrong and suffer the consequences.

  17. If social media is not used properly than the inappropriate users should be kicked of by the company or brand of social media. If inappropriate pictures of any one is posted on social media than the picture should be deleted or banned from the type of social media

  20. In my opinion social media should be used for people to share things and talk to others, as long as they are appropriate and not like what those teenagers did. I do think that some major penalties should be placed on people who use it to mistreat others like what those teenagers did. But honestly you can't just make consequences for every little insult that there is online, after all this is the internet, the place where anyone, anywhere, can write things like "you suck" on everything they see. If I was the judge for this crime I would send them to jail to at least five years (the minimum sentence time for kidnapping, yes I looked it up XD). In conclusion this is why we have the internet kids, to look up how long you can go to jail for kidnapping and possibly have the police investigate you for it.

  21. SOcial media should be used for talking to friends or updating others on how your day/nignt went. It really depends on how bad you use the media, if ur using it to bully or harass others, you should get suspended for a week, If i were the judge i would sent these kids off to jail for 15 years because not only was it kidnapping but it was also harasment and bribing people for there money

  22. Social media should be used when you want to share something with everyone like an appropriate photo or if you want to know what others are doing. You can also use it as a means to talk to your friends. If people don't use social media properly, I think there should be a penalty of paying an amount of money. This will make the person post proper things because they wouldn't want to pay money. If I were a judge, I would sentence those teenagers to jail for 5 or 6 years and then I would put them on a parole for about a 1-2 years, and if they change, I'll let them go, but if the don't, they will continue to be on parole.

  23. Social media should be used to interact with others and should be used properly. It is a privilege to use these social medias and with privileges there comes responsibilities. If people do not use these social medias properly they should get into some sort of trouble. What those children did to that boy was very wrong and should be put in jail and prohibited from social medias cuz it shows they do not know the proper use of this technology.

  24. Social media is used to the point where it becomes a distraction for many. Exploitation of social media could make it even considered as far as a plague and it has been exploited time after time. Many use the media in a manner that could be hurtful towards many individuals. There are places that use vulgar and within the COMMUNITY and most are okay with it even if it’s towards them. With this scenario it is very different because an individual is being exposed in a manner that is to degrade their confidence for having an illness. I would say yes a punishment should be applied as it is against the law to bully and those teens have done so physically and whatever the adjective for cyber is… virtually.

  25. I think anyone who misuses social media, there should be a money fine, depending on the severity of the misuse for example: somebody who posts sexual photos should be fined 50 $ for spreading Pornography and after multiple offences, will have the account taken down and possible jail/community service time. If I were the judge, I would charge them with physical assault, mental assault, torture , illegal confinement, defamation of character, invasion of privacy, and etc. . I would give the two ones that did the most damage the death penalty, and the others 50 years jail and no parole.

  27. I think that it was a horrible thing that these people did. I think that Facebook and other social media sites have their ups and downs. They are a nice place to talk to your friends but are a place for easy access for bullies. I think that to an extent like this situation the people who did this should go to jail but for smaller issues with other people they would have to pay 1000$ to the person that they offended and be removed from the social media that they use.
