Blog 37 - Monday, February 27, 2017

In case you have not noticed, Ms. Valois, the vice-principal, has had a companion with her this year.
That companion is Cricket.

How has having a pet therapy dog affected your school experience?

Based on your observations, has this been a positive or negative experience?

Explain.

  1. Personally, having a therapy dog in the school has not affected me in any way since I don't see Cricket very often, but she is definitely super adorable! I have noticed, however, that other people seem to enjoy Cricket's company very much, and I think that she has made a positive impact on their experience at our school. Having a dog reduces their stress level, and overall gives people lots of company. Plus, she's really friendly and she loves to be pet.

  2. Having a therapy dog at school has barely affected me in many ways.I don't see the dog often or pet it but Cricket seems like a great and comforting dog. I personally think Cricket is more of an entertainment than a help. Although this dog might make an impact on some students most of the students enjoy the dog because well who doesn't like dogs. There is no negative impact to our school by having this dog in my opinion.

  3. For me, having a therapy dog hasn't really affected me in any way, mostly because it's pretty rare that I'll see her. But I have noticed that many other students love having Cricket around. I do know for a fact that she has a very positive impact on other students as she does reduce the stress. I think it's really comforting for many students to have Cricket around.

  4. For me the therapy dog has not affected me at all because I don't really see her. I have seen a lot of other students go see cricket almost every day. Once in awhile when I walk past the cycle 1 office i'll see cricket and i'll pet her but that's pretty much the only time I see her. I think that for some students it is very comforting to have cricket around and I think that it's comforting too. I believe that when students spend time with cricket it reduces stress. Having cricket around is pretty cool because not many schools have a dog around in their school.

  6. Having a pet therapy dog has affected my school experience in many ways, actually all positive ways! One of the positive things about having cricket (a pet therapy dog) around is that if I'm ever having a bad day and Cricket is there I can always walk by the front office and pet her. When I pet a dog it immediately cheers me up, mostly because all dogs are very cute and if I see a cute fluffy animal and I get to pet him/her as I said before I will be very happy! Also whenever I pet any cute animal (that is nice) it will lower my heart rate when I am stressed and that is good for my health!

  7. I don't really have time to pet cricket or play with him but when I do he rolls over (he likes me) I personally think that cricket is there to put a smile on everyone's face and to hold him if they don't feel well. I have a dog and I love holding him when I don't feel well. they just put you in a better mood.
    Thanks for reading

  9. I see Cricket pretty often by the cycle one office. There is always a bunch of student petting her. You can also tell that they are happy to be around her. Having Cricket around could reduce stress. If you have a bad day and you see Cricket and you start petting her you will feel better. This hasn't affected me in anyway but it sure did affect other people. I think that having Cricket at our school is a good idea.

  10. I love dogs. In fact, I love all animals! Having Cricket at school has been a really good experience. It was a super idea of Ms. Valois to bring him into school every day. As I pass by the vice-principal’s office, I always stop to pet Cricket. Having him at school makes school feel like a home away from home. While I don’t have that many interactions with Cricket, I could imagine that if any student needed to go to the Cycle I office, they might feel less stressed and comforted if they had Cricket to pet.

  11. I think that it is so nice to have a dog in our high school. Dogs are really playful, cute and they make you happy. They are really great pets, but I don't think that it affects me.I do see the dog almost 3 times a week but I don't go to pet the dog. I usually have to get my stuff for my next class. I don't think that students have as much time to pet the dog in the hallway. Even if it's lunch or recess, I still don't understand why you would go and waste your time while most of the time the dog isn't there.

  12. Cricket hasn't affected my school experience. But it is really convenient to pet her whenever you walk by the office. It also makes kids feel more comfortable, instead of talking to a teacher about your problems you can talk to a dog which sounds weird but a dog won't judge you. Even though the dog can't talk back to you or say anything to help you they're listening and that makes you feel good.

  13. I personally do not see anything being impacted in a negative way because of cricket unless someone has some sort of fear of dogs or is allergic to Cricket’s breed of dog ( I severely lack knowledge about dogs). Cricket adds to the somewhat friendly atmosphere of St-Thomas and is also very well trained. Personally though I rarely see cricket I think i’ve see him/her a few times like 5 so Cricket does not have much of an impact on my school work/studies.

  14. Cricket has effected my school experience a lot, she's a cute a wonderful dog to go see after a day of stress, and for people who want to, they can go talk to her and she'll sit there and listen attentively. She has affected the school, positively by giving special needs students somewhere to go and someone to talk too.

  15. My opinion might seem a bit biased since I love dogs. but... I love having Cricket around. She helps in some ways by helping kids who might be stressed or anxious but, personally I think that she is mostly there just for the sake of "It's a dog!" and while that isn't a bad thing, I can see how if someone is allergic to dogs that can be an inconvenience. As I said I love Cricket and I don't see any problems with her apart from the fact that it may inconvenience someone who is allergic to dogs.

  16. Cricket hasn't effected my school experience so far but I find it very convenient that Ms Valois has her but I think it has effected other kids. Almost every time I pass the cycle one office, I see someone talking to cricket or just petting her and I find that very sweet. For me, Cricket hasn't effected me in a positive way or a negative way.

  17. Its nice to have an animal around i guess, I dont have time to pet it because im in a rush to get to my classes, if you spend a lot of time in the office, its nice chill with a dog for a while. I guess you can say its a good thing, but for the people who are alergic to dogs, its a bad thing.

  18. I think that it's awesome that we get to have Cricket with us at school!! The best part is that she is even right next to my locker which is really cool!! Even though I don't have as much time as I would like to be able to pet Cricket I still think that it has made school funner!! Cricket isn't a therapy dog to me she is a furry friend!! I think that the idea of bringing Cricket to school was an awesome idea!!

  19. Having a pet therapy dog in school hasn't really impacted me in anyway. It's nice to have an animal around and I'm not bothered when Cricket comes near me. Mrs. Valois's idea of bringing Cricket to our school wasn't bad, it's actually cool to have a dog in your school. I don't even have time to pet him because I'm in a rush to get to class. Cricket may have helped other students, but for me, he didn't have any impact on me.

  20. I think that having a therapy dog didn’t seriously affect my school experience this year. I don’t usually get to see Cricket because whenever he’s out in the hallway I’m on my way to class and I don’t always pass by the front office. On the other hand, when I do see the therapy dog in the hallway it makes me smile because I love dogs. I think that having a therapy dog has a positive impact on the students at school because if you’re having a rough day petting a dog and having a moment with a domestic animal could totally change your day. The only possible way having a therapy dog in a school could have a negative impact on the school community is if you’re a student who is allergic to dogs. It’s very likely that you would go home with hives or any other allergic reaction. Another negative factor of having a therapy dog is if you’re scared of dogs. Anyone knows that if you’re scared of dogs, you’re not just scared, you’re extremely scared. Overall, I think that having Cricket has a positive impact on the school community because it makes most people happy and calm.

  21. I love to see Cricket! Having her in the school affects my mood in the best of ways. I never had a school pet before, so it’s a brand new experience for me. And I really, really like it. I usually see her once a day or once every two days. Most of the time, I see her in the cycle one office. I always feel better after I see Cricket. She puts a smile on my face; every time!

I didn’t know it was possible for a dog to light everyone’s mood in school. But somehow, Cricket does just that. You can’t stay mad, sad or depressed around her. Sometimes, when I’m unhappy, I see Cricket and I immediately feel happy again. I don’t know how she does it but everyone seems happier around her. Having Cricket in St-Thomas is definitely a positive experience. It would be cool to have more pets in the school. It’s so much fun to pet Cricket, she makes me feel good about myself. Thanks Cricket!

  23. Cricket is a very nice and well behaved dog. I see the good affects he has on the students of the school and I think having a therapy dog is a great idea. I personally am allergic to dogs but I know dogs help and calm down other students who aren't allergic and who like dogs. Cricket is a very nice dog and it's great having him here.

  24. First of all, I love dogs!!!!! Having Cricket around in school affected my school experience because my teachers give me a lot of tests to study for all at once and that stresses me out. But for me dogs are the one thing that help me calm down. So being able to see a dog everyday of school helps calm my nerves. Based of of my observations this has been a positive experience. It has been a positive experience because I see a lot of the students petting Cricket and playing with her when they can.

  26. I think that my best experience during march break is that my birthday falls wright in between it. I think that this awesome since I have so much time after my birthday to do what I want. I also get to spend more of my day with my family. I also get to sleep in on my birthday with is also awesome! I definably think this is why I am so exited the week before March break. This is definably why my march breaks are so memorable.
